This jutsu is exclusive to Gaara. With it, he is able to control a fixed amount of sand which he carries around in a gourd on his back to his will, rather to attack his opponents or defend. Should an attack be made against Gaara, his sand will come to his aid to block the attack, completely independant of his will. Any attack that is sent at Gaara will be instantly blocked. For this reason, it has been named the Ultimate Defense. To date, the only two people who have been able to hurt Gaara are Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha. Even if Gaara would wish to be hurt, the sand will still rush to protect him. It has been described by Naruto as being like a living thing. However, the sand's defensive nature is due to the Shukaku that was sealed inside of Gaara when he was born. It is possible to get past Gaara's sand defense, however, it is also extremely difficult. Also, Gaara can send a small portion of sand mixed with his chakra into his surrounding area, and it will break up the minerals, turning them into sand as well. This new sand can also be controlled by Gaara, which he will most often use for his Sand Tsunami technique.
Gaara's sand can be used in various ways. The most frequent way he likes to use it is by engulfing his opponents completely with it, and then using his chakra embedded in the sand to smash them completely. This technique is called Sand Burial. He can also take balls of sand and shoot them as projectiles, which are called Sand Shuriken. Also, should an enemy manage to make it past Gaara's initial sand defense, he can coat his body in a Sand Armor, which will provide an almost impenetrable backup defense. After the armor has taken an attack, it will instantly regenerate. When the time calls for an air battle, Gaara can create a cloud of sand under his feet in order to support him in the air, giving him a better vantage point for battle. Also, should water get into his sand and make it unusable, Gaara can pump his chakra into it and expel the water molecules, making it good as new.
